Portrait-Robot.
― Exhibition "Science in the Pursuit of Crime" at the National Archives (Pierrefitte-sur-Seine)
The portrait-robot is a tool used in forensic police work to recreate as accurately as possible the features of a person being sought. However, scientific studies conducted since the 1970s have consistently highlighted a key finding: a portrait-robot is often far from faithful to the original face it is meant to represent.
In the spring of 2017, alongside members of the Regional Identity Service of the Paris Police Prefecture, we set out to test this observation. Several forensic experts participated in an exercise to create a portrait-robot of one of their colleagues using the "Photofit" kit, developed in 1970 by Jacques Penry. The results confirmed that the way a person perceives a face is often incompatible with reconstructing it using fragmented features.
